Novanet Express

Novanet Express enables Novanet library borrowers to request, via the Novanet catalogue, the delivery of materials from one Novanet library to another. Novanet Express is offered free of charge.

Novanet Express participating libraries include:

  • Atlantic School of Theology
  • Cape Breton University
  • Dalhousie University Libraries
  • Mount Saint Vincent University
  • Nova Scotia Agricultural Library
  • Nova Scotia Community College Libraries
  • NSCAD University
  • St. Francis Xavier University
  • Saint Mary's University
  • University of King's College

Delivery of Materials

  • Requests received before 9:00 a.m. are processed the same day and are delivered within 3 business days.
  • Requests received after 9:00 a.m. are processed on the next business day and are delivered within 3 business days.
  • Requesters select the library from which the item will be sent, and the destination library.
  • Materials must be listed on the Novanet System to be eligible for delivery. Users may request loans of circulating material or photocopies of specific items.
  • Materials with an Item Status of Non Circulating are not available for loan.. An item is available to request if it has a Due Date status of "in library".
  • Copyright or other circumstances may restrict access to other material (e.g. condition of the item).

Notification

  • Requesters are notified by e-mail or phone when the item is ready to be picked up at the destination library.
  • If an item cannot be delivered, requesters will be notified by e-mail or phone.
  • Materials are held for 5 days.
  • Acknowledgements, cancellations, and notifications about the status of a request are sent to the patron's e-mail address identified at the time of library registration.

Placing a Novanet Express Request

Step 1

Search the Novanet catalogue to locate an item and select the Location library from where it is being requested.

Step 2

Select Novanet Express/Hold (for a book or video) or Novanet Express/Photocopy (for a journal article).

Step 3

At this point, if you are not logged in to the catalogue already, Novanet will prompt you to do so. Searchers must enter their 14 digit Novanet barcode number provided at the time of library registration, as well as the last 4 digits of their telephone number as the password (searchers can change this password in their library account). Novanet authenticates all patrons placing a Novanet Express request to ensure they are valid Novanet library borrowers.

Step 4

Novanet Express/Hold (for a book or video):
  • Select the Pickup/Deliver to: location from the drop-down menu and click Go (the default pickup location will be your home library).
  • The Full View of Record is confirmation of your request with a note above the title indicating that the item has been requested for pickup at the selected library (note the Due Date's status on the item indicates "requested").
Novanet Express/Photocopy (for a journal article):
  • Select the Pickup/Deliver to: location from the drop-down menu (the default pickup location will be your home library).
  • Complete the fields that require the author, title, pages, and issue information of the periodical article. Note: All fields indicated with a * are required to be completed. If this information is not available, type N/A.
  • Click Go.
  • The Full View of Record is confirmation of your request with a note above the title indicating that the item has been requested for pickup at the selected library.

CAUTION: If you request an item that is currently on loan to another patron, you are placing a Hold request, not a Novanet Express. Although you will be notified by the library when this item is returned and is available to borrow, this item will not be delivered to your location. You are required to pick this item up at it's owning library when it is returned to the shelves by the previous patron. Placing a hold on an item only ensures that you are the next borrower in the queue for this item and are required to visit the owning library to pick it up.
